Podcasting

Autore: Jeremy Wade Morris

Numero di pagine: 154

Podcasting burst onto the media landscape in the early 2000s. At the time, there were hopes it might usher in a new wave of amateur and professional cultural production and represent an alternate model for how to produce, share, circulate and experience new voices and perspectives. Twenty years later, podcasting is at a critical juncture in its young history: a moment where the early ideals of open standards and platform-neutral distribution are giving way to services that prioritize lean-back listening and monetizable media experiences. This book provides an accessible and comprehensive account of one of digital media’s most vibrant formats. Focusing on the historical changes shaping podcasts as a media format, the book explores the industrial, technological and cultural components of podcasting alongside case studies of various podcasts, industry publications, and streaming audio platforms (e.g. Spotify, Google and Apple Podcasts). Jeremy Morris argues that as streaming platforms push to make podcasting more industrialized, accessible, user-friendly and similar to other audio media like music or audiobooks, they threaten podcasting’s early, though always unrealized,...

Podcasting as an Intimate Medium

Podcasting as an Intimate Medium

Autore: Alyn Euritt

Numero di pagine: 157

This book delves into the notion of intimacy as a defining feature of podcasting, examining the concept of intimacy itself and how the public sphere explores the relationships created and maintained through podcasts. The book situates textual analysis of specific American podcasts within podcast criticism, monetization, and production advice. Through analysis of these sources' self-descriptions, the text builds a podcasting-specific framework for intimacy and uses that framework to interpret how podcasting imagines the connections it forms within communities. Instead of intimacy being inherent, the book argues that podcasting constructs intimacy and uses it to define the quality of its own mediation. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of New and Digital Media, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Journalism, Literature, Cultural Studies, and American Studies. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a CreativeCommons Attribution 4.0 license.

Podcasting in a Platform Age

Podcasting in a Platform Age

Autore: John L. Sullivan

Numero di pagine: 297

Podcasting in a Platform Age explores the transition underway in podcasting by considering how the influx of legacy and new media interest in the medium is injecting professional and corporate logics into what had been largely an amateur media form. Many of the most high-profile podcasts today, however, are produced by highly-skilled media professionals, some of whom are employees of media corporations. Legacy radio and new media platform giants like Google, Apple, Amazon, and Spotify are also making big (and expensive) moves in the medium by acquiring content producers and hosting platforms. This book focuses on three major aspects of this transformation: formalization, professionalization, and monetization. Through a close read of online and press discourse, analysis of podcasts themselves, participant observations at podcast trade shows and conventions, and interviews with industry professionals and individual podcasters, John Sullivan outlines how the efforts of industry players to transform podcasting into a profitable medium are beginning to challenge the very definition of podcasting itself.

Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession

Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession

Autore: Neil Verma

Numero di pagine: 277

It has been a decade since Serial brought the narrative podcast to the center of popular culture. In that time, there has been an enormous boom in the production of podcasts that tell stories, particularly in the fields of true crime, storytelling, history, and narrative fiction. Now that the initial glow around the medium has begun to fade, it is time to reevaluate the medium’s technological, political, economic, and cultural rise, in particular what types of storytelling accompanied that rise. Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession is the first book to look back on this prodigious body of material and attempt to make sense of it from a structural, historical, and analytic point of view. Focusing on more than 350 podcasts and other audio works released between Serial and the COVID pandemic, the book explores why so many of these podcasts seem “obsessed with obsession,” why they focus not only on informing listeners but also dramatizing the labor that goes into it, and why fiction podcasts work so hard to prove they are a brand new form, even as they revive features of radio from decades gone by. This work also examines the industry's reckoning with its own implication...

Podcasting

Autore: Luigi Lupo

Podcasting Now!

Podcasting Now!

Autore: Andrew J. Dagys

Numero di pagine: 276

Podcasting is a combination of MP3 files, Internet radio, RSS ("Really Simple Syndication"), and iPods. MP3 files are typically individual tracks from music or comedy CDs, Internet radio is done with streaming audio in real time, and RSS lets your computer automatically keep track of new information posted on websites. Podcasting combines these technologies to create radio/music/talk programs that you can download and play on your computer or on an iPod or other portable player. Not only can you listen to podcasts, you can create and distribute your own podcasts without a lot of difficulty. Many of the techniques already used to publicize a website or a blog can be used to promote a podcast. In fact, one popular use for podcasting is as an audio blog. Podcasters can also include images and other data, so podcasting can be used for business as well as entertainment. It's possible to build training curriculum, product briefings, marketing presentations, and even new employee orientations with podcasts: the potential for this field is barely scratched.

Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This paper explores how podcasts can revolutionize learning in the EFL (English as a foreign language) classroom. Not only are podcasts easily accessible and transcend knowledge barriers, but they also foster close-knit communities and offer a variety of genres and formats. Although increasingly popular with young adults, their potential often remains untapped in schools. This study aims to show how teachers can use podcasts effectively in the classroom to promote communicative, intercultural and media literacy skills. With concrete application examples and creative teaching concepts, we want to give teachers the tools to integrate podcasts profitably into EFL lessons and thus make learning more exciting and interactive.
