Socialism in Power

Socialism in Power

Autore: Roland Boer

Numero di pagine: 287

This book examines the historical development—in practice and theory—of governance in socialist systems. With more than a century of such development from many parts of the world, including the Soviet Union, China, and the DPRK (North Korea), it is possible to gain much from careful study of their political systems. But what is the nature of this socialist governance? It is abundantly clear that the type of governance in socialist countries had never before been seen in human history. How does this governance work? What was the political theory that arose from the practice? How did this type of governance develop over time and in light of specific conditions? These are the questions that Socialism in Power sets out to answer. It does so not by using methods developed for studying Western liberal nation-states, but by deploying Marxist-Leninist analysis. Not an abstract Marxism, but concrete Marxism, as it was applied and developed in light of the particular historical conditions of the countries in question. The book begins with careful analysis of the works of Marx and Engels, with a particular emphasis on Engels, who was crucial in establishing the basic principles of socialist ...

The Old Lady Who Rose From Betrayal

Autore: Mandy Calhoun

Numero di pagine: 105

Tang Xiuyu, who built her fortune from nothing, was drained dry by her children and grandchildren. After her rebirth, she became Song Jinzhi—the very woman who had been abused to death by her own son. Never again would she believe in words of kindness. She swore that when she rose again, every ungrateful wolf would pay their blood debts in full. From then on, she became infamous across ten villages as the notorious shrew whom no one dared provoke. Everyone thought she had gone mad—she could barely feed herself yet treated a “money-losing” little girl like treasure. But no one knew that the girl was a natural-born koi of fortune, able to foresee blessings and disasters. From that day, Song Jinzhi’s life turned into a string of miracles. Rising from a mere farmwife in Lushan Village, she soared to become the imperial merchant of Great Zhou. The very first thing she did was to cut off the path of fame and glory for those ungrateful sons. When the frontier was in crisis, she threw out twenty-eight palanquins filled with gold bricks, shocking the entire court. And when those ungrateful sons knelt to acknowledge her again, she kicked over the offering table with a sneer. “My ...

The Huayan University Network

The Huayan University Network

Autore: Erik J. Hammerstrom

Numero di pagine: 163

In the early twentieth century, Chinese Buddhists sought to strengthen their tradition through publications, institution building, and initiatives aimed at raising the educational level of the monastic community. In The Huayan University Network, Erik J. Hammerstrom examines how Huayan Buddhism was imagined, taught, and practiced during this time of profound political and social change and, in so doing, recasts the history of twentieth-century Chinese Buddhism. Hammerstrom traces the influence of Huayan University, the first Buddhist monastic school founded after the fall of the imperial system in China. Although the university lasted only a few years, its graduates went on to establish a number of Huayan-centered educational programs throughout China. While they did not create a new sectarian Huayan movement, they did form a network unified by a common educational heritage that persists to the present day. Drawing on an extensive range of Buddhist texts and periodicals, Hammerstrom shows that Huayan had a significant impact on Chinese Buddhist thought and practice and that the history of Huayan complicates narratives of twentieth-century Buddhist modernization and revival....
