Autore: Bonnie Anderson

Numero di pagine: 270

While talking heads debate the media's alleged conservative orliberal bias, award-winning journalist Bonnie Anderson knows thatthe problem with television news isn't about the Left versus theRight--it's all about the money. From illegal hiring practices toethnocentric coverage to political cheerleading, News Flashexposes how American broadcast conglomerates' pursuit of thealmighty dollar consistently trumps the need for fair and objectivereporting. Along the way to the bottomline, the proud tradition ofAmerican television journalism has given way to anentertainment-driven industry that's losing credibility and viewersby the day. As someone who has worked as both a broadcast reporter and anetwork executive, Anderson details how the networks have beenco-opted by bottom-line thinking that places more value on atelegenic face than on substantive reporting. Networkexecutives—the real power in broadcast journalism—areincreasingly employing tactics and strategies from theentertainment industry. They "cast" reporters based on theirability to "project credibility," value youth over training andexperience, and often greenlight coverage only if they can beassured that it will appeal to...

The Early Shortwave Stations

The Early Shortwave Stations

Autore: Jerome S. Berg

Numero di pagine: 342

In July 1923, less than three years after Westinghouse station KDKA signed on, company engineer Frank Conrad began regular simulcasting of its programs on a frequency in the newly-discovered shortwave range. It was an important event in a technological revolution that would make dependable worldwide radio communication possible for the first time. In subsequent years, countless stations in practically all countries followed suit, taking to shortwave to extend reception domestically or reach audiences thousands of miles away. Shortwave broadcasting would also have an important role in World War II and in the Cold War. In this, his fourth book on shortwave broadcast history, the author revisits the period of his earlier work, On the Short Waves, 1923-1945, and focuses on the stations that were on the air in those early days. The year-by-year account chronicles the birth and operation of the large international broadcasters, as well as the numerous smaller stations that were a great attraction to the DXers, or long-distance radio enthusiasts, of the time. With more than 100 illustrations and extensive notes, bibliography and index, the book is also a valuable starting point for...

SELLING RADIO PB

SELLING RADIO PB

Autore: Smulyan Susan

Numero di pagine: 260

And now a word from our sponsor ... When the first radio stations signed on in the 1920s, this phrase was unknown to listeners. Fifteen years later, however, advertising ruled the airwaves. Selling Radio recounts the initial difficult coupling of broadcasting and advertising, shows how the triumph of advertising transformed the content of radio programming, and exposes the complicity of business, technology, and government in reducing the promise of radio to the adage that "time is money." Susan Smulyan argues that the emergence of commercialized broadcasting was not an inevitable development but rather the result of a bitter struggle over the form and content of the new technology. Initially schools, churches, and small businesses sponsored stations, broadcasting local sporting events and such home-grown comedy and musical acts as "The Happiness Boys." In the mid-1920s, the enthusiasm that greeted the idea of a national broadcasting system quickly soured with the announcement that wired networks using AT & T's long lines would be financed by selling radio time to advertisers. Early opponents of commercial radio included not only listeners but also station owners, educators,...

Pioneers of B Television

Pioneers of "B" Television

Autore: Richard Irvin

Numero di pagine: 224

As television grew more enticing for both viewers and filmmakers in the 1950s, several independent film producers with knowledge of making low-cost films and radio shows transferred their skills to producing shows for the small screen. Rather than funding live programs that were popular at the time, these producers saw the value in pre-taped shows, which created large financial returns through episode reruns. This low-cost, high-yield production model resulted in what are known and beloved as "B" television shows. Part historical account and part filmography, this book documents the careers of over a dozen "B" television producers. It chronicles the rise of situation comedies and crime dramas and explores the minds behind popular shows like My Little Margie, The Lone Ranger, Lassie, Highway Patrol and Sea Hunt. Divided into 14 chapters of producer profiles, this work is rich in both trivia and critical assessments of the first years of television. A chapter detailing the work of early female television producers rounds out the text.

Purchase and Sale of Broadcast Stations

Purchase and Sale of Broadcast Stations

Autore: Erwin G. Krasnow , John M. Pelkey , John Wells King

The acquisition of a broadcast station is not like the acquisition of a newspaper or an internet site, which can take place as soon as the financing is arranged and the legal papers are drawn up. The time between signing an agreement for the sale of a broadcast station and the station actually changing hands can take six months to a year, and in some cases even longer.
