Autore: Sally Thorne

IL LIBRO DEL FILM DI SUCCESSO DISPONIBILE SU PRIME VIDEO Odio e amore si assomigliano in modo inquietante. Lucy Hutton ambisce all'ufficio migliore (e relativa promozione).

Sayre Family

Sayre Family

Autore: Ralph Hall Sayre

Numero di pagine: 321

Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson, Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their inherent abilities. SAYRE FAMILY...another 100-years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of...

Unmothering Autism

Unmothering Autism

Autore: Patty Douglas

Numero di pagine: 305

As global rates of autism diagnosis rise, dominant cultural representations continue to define autism as a tragic neurological disorder. And mothers – as primary caregivers and advocates – are centrally implicated in the impulse to find both cause and cure. How should we care about autism and autistic people? Unmothering Autism emerged from Patty Douglas’s desire to understand a contradiction: she and her two sons (one autistic) experienced beauty living together, while their public encounters with doctors, school professionals, and agencies were fraught and sometimes violent. In this book, Douglas offers a critical history of popular and biomedical assumptions about autism, expressed through shifting social constructs that blame or valorize maternal care. Throughout, she also intersperses her own insights and shares conversations she has had with other “autism mothers.” Unmothering Autism theorizes an “ethics of disruption,” reorienting us to autism and autistic people as valuable and fundamentally human. It centres the previously marginalized perspectives of mothers and autistic individuals to affirm their knowledge of living well together in, and through,...

Disability in Africa

Disability in Africa

Autore: Toyin Falola , Nic Hamel

Numero di pagine: 453

Exploring issues of disability culture, activism, and policy across the African continent, this volume argues for the recognition of African disability studies as an important and emerging interdisciplinary field. While the disability rights movement of recent decades has a rich and well-documented history, it is a history mostly focused on the Global North. Disability in Africa presents an interdisciplinary approach to cultural, health, and policy challenges that disability issues have raised throughout the African continent. The volume draws on the achievements of disability studies while acknowledging the demands and challenges of particular African contexts. The authors bring diverse methodological approaches and expertise to bear on these issues, ranging from anthropology and bioethics to special education and community rehabilitation. Essays consider indigenously African definitions of disability as well as exploring disability at the intersection of poverty, geography, and globalized biopolitics. Contributors analyze the difficulties of implementing disability policy across the continent while also being mindful of successful approaches taken at local, national, and...

The Social Psychology of Collective Victimhood

The Social Psychology of Collective Victimhood

Autore: Johanna Ray Vollhardt

Numero di pagine: 471

Throughout the world, many continue to experience collective violence and its long-lasting consequences. This book examines the social psychological processes involved in experiences of collective victimization and oppression, as well as the consequences of these experiences for individuals and for relations within and between groups. In twenty chapters, authors explore questions such as: How are experiences of collective victimization passed down and understood? How do people cope with and make sense of these experiences? Who is included and excluded from the category of "victims," and what are the psychological consequences of such denial versus acknowledgment of collective victimization? And finally, what are the ethics of researching collective victimization, especially when these experiences are recent or politically contested? The authors examine these questions and others across a range of different contexts of collective violence in different parts of the world, including ethnic and religious conflicts, the aftermath of genocides, post-Apartheid, consequences of settler colonialism, racism, the caste system, and national histories of victimization.

New Frontiers in Popular Romance

New Frontiers in Popular Romance

Autore: Susan Fanetti

Numero di pagine: 247

In the twenty-first century, the romance genre has gained a growing academic response, including the creation of the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance. Popular romance has long been so ignored and maligned that seemingly every scholarly work on it opens with a lengthy defense of the genre and its value for academic study. Even the early scholarly works on the genre approach it in ways that, while primarily respectful, make sweeping generalizations about popular romance, its texts, and its readers. This essay collection examines the position of the romance genre in the twenty-first century, and the ways in which romance responds to and influences the culture and community in which it exists. Essays are divided into six sections, which cover the genre's relationship with masculinity, the importance of consent, historical romance, representation, social status and web-based romance fiction.

Childhood, Agency, and Fantasy

Childhood, Agency, and Fantasy

Autore: Ingrid E. Castro

Numero di pagine: 291

Joining the emergent interdisciplinary investment in bridging the social sciences and the humanities, Childhood, Agency, and Fantasy: Walking in Other Worlds explores linkages between children’s agency and fantasy. Fantasy as an integral aspect of childhood and as a genre allows for children’s spectacular dreams and hopeful realities. Friendship, family, identity, loyalty, belongingness, citizenry, and emotionality are central concepts explored in chapters that are anchored by humanities texts of television, film, and literature, but also by social science qualitative methods of participant observation and interviews. Fantasy has the capacity to be a revolutionary change agent that in its modernity can creatively reflect, critique, or reimagine the social, political, and cultural norms of our world. Such promise is also found to be true of children’s agency, wherein children’s beings and becomings, rooted in childhood’s freedoms and constraints, result in a range of outcomes. In the endeavor to broaden theory and research on children’s agency, fantasy becomes a point of possibility with its expanding subjectivities, far-reaching terrain, and spirit of adventure.

Representing Agency in Popular Culture

Representing Agency in Popular Culture

Autore: Ingrid E. Castro , Jessica Clark

Numero di pagine: 333

Representing Agency in Popular Culture: Children and Youth on Page, Screen and In-Between addresses the intersection of children’s and youth’s agency and popular culture. As scholars in childhood studies and beyond seek to expand understandings of agency, power, and voice in children’s lives, this book places popular culture and representation as central to this endeavor. Core themes of family, gender, temporality, politics, education, technology, disability, conflict, identity, ethnicity, and friendship traverse across the chapters, framed through various film, television, literature, and virtual media sources. Here, childhood is considered far from homogeneous and the dominance of neoliberal models of agency is questioned by intersectional and intergenerational analyses. This book posits there is vast power in popular culture representations of children’s agency, and interrogation of these themes through interdisciplinary lenses is vital to furthering knowledge and understanding about children’s lives and within childhood studies.

A Space Away From the Ableist Gaze?

A Space Away From the Ableist Gaze?

Autore: Rebecka Tiefenbacher

Numero di pagine: 214

The aim of this thesis is to explore what separate leisure—i.e., leisure exclusive to children with disabilities—makes and does not make possible for this group of children's leisure. A further aim is to investigate how to do research 'with' rather than 'about' children with disabilities. To accomplish this aim, an ethnographic study was conducted at a separate leisure space for 3–11-year-old children with neuropsychiatric disabilities (e.g., ADHD, autism). Three research questions are addressed which concern: (i) how to methodologically explore children's perspectives of separate leisure; (ii) the ideas about children's needs, and about meaningful leisure, that inform and are expressed by the design and organisation of separate leisure; and (iii) children's perspectives of separate leisure. The study's theoretical framework consists of three parts: disabled children’s childhood studies, separate leisure in the context of childhood and disability, and the places and spaces of separate leisure. In sum, the study shows how separate leisure can lower thresholds for inclusion and participation in leisure. In this way, it becomes an important means of creating opportunities...

The Great Houdini

The Great Houdini

Autore: Derek Tait

Numero di pagine: 510

This fascinating biography “brings to life the excitement and thrills” of the master escape artist’s legendary turn-of-century tour in Great Britain (Lancashire Post). Between 1900 and 1920, a century before endurance artist and street magician David Blaine, Hungarian-born Harry Houdini traveled Great Britain, performing in its major villages and cities. He befriended Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, immersed himself in spiritualism and most notably, escaped from jails, survived death-defying leaps into rivers while bound in chains, and executed amazing tricks and illusions. On each stop, he challenged locals to design “inescapable” contraptions. He was always triumphant, and his awesome, crowd-drawing feats made him the highest paid entertainer in the world at the time. Extensively researched, The Great Houdini: His British Tours follows Houdini’s decades-long UK tour through rare archival material, vintage newspaper clippings, photos, and original playbills and ballyhoo advertisements—many of which have not been seen since they were originally published. This “must read . . . cause for celebration . . . packed with new, fascinating facts” delivers a thrilling look into...

Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology

Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology

Autore: Adam Joinson , Katelyn Mckenna , Tom Postmes , Ulf-dietrich Reips

Numero di pagine: 517

Over one billion people use the Internet globally. Psychologists are beginning to understand what people do online, and the impact being online has on behaviour. It's making us re-think many of our existing assumptions about what it means to be a social being. For instance, if we can talk, flirt, meet people and fall in love online, this challenges many of psychology's theories that intimacy or understanding requires physical co-presence. "The Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology" brings together many of the leading researchers in what can be termed 'Internet Psychology'. Though a very new area of research, it is growing at a phenomenal pace. In addition to well-studied areas of investigation, such as social identity theory, computer-mediated communication and virtual communities, the volume also includes chapters on topics as diverse as deception and misrepresentation, attitude change and persuasion online, Internet addiction, online relationships, privacy and trust, health and leisure use of the Internet, and the nature of interactivity. With over 30 chapters written by experts in the field, the range and depth of coverage is unequalled, and serves to define this emerging area ...

Entrepreneurial Identity and Identity Work

Entrepreneurial Identity and Identity Work

Autore: Claire M. Leitch , Richard Harrison

Numero di pagine: 191

Identities can potentially serve as powerful elements that both drive, and are shaped by, entrepreneurial actions. Entrepreneurial identity is a complex construct with multidisciplinary roots, and therefore there is scope to more fully enrich our theoretical understanding of identity and identity formation, at both individual and organizational levels, and their relationship to entrepreneurial processes, practices and activities. This book highlights two key features of contemporary research on entrepreneurial identity. First, to see it as a dynamic rather than a (relatively) fixed and unchanging feature, shaped by different life episodes. It is increasingly fluid, multilevel and multidimensional, comprising multiple subidentities rather than a univocal (and unchanging) self. As such, it has a profound effect not only on the way we feel, think and behave, but also on what we aim to achieve. Accordingly, it is vital that its dynamics are better understood, particularly in determining how actors behave in an entrepreneurial context. The book’s second focus is on identity work as the process through which entrepreneurial identities are formed and shaped, and the contributors...
