Légère et tourmentée, la mer immense

Autore: Jo Watberg

The Oulunsalo Gallery

Autore: Jani Ojala

Numero di pagine: 272

The idea to take titlecard-photos for each chapter of all Oulunsalo Fiction-books occurred to me in 2018, as I prepped for the process of releasing the trilogy on wordpress.com. There needed to be a thumbnail when you share it on social media, and I thought: why not? These stories, these characters, conflicts and settings provoke mental images in my mind all day long anyways. Be nice to express that. Little things from my hometown, Oulunsalo, inspire me more than I'll probably remember ten years from now. I'll have this trilogy to look back on, in case I ever forget. So this book is different from anything I've released before. It's a book about my books - the absolute power move for a young writer working in fiction. The trilogy was a 5-year project, and here I'll go in-depth about what inspired everything in the magnum opus of my writing career... so far. I'll be a lot less formal here than I've been on anything else, going over memories and images. To keep up with that spirit, I didn't edit the book at all either. All written in one take. Probably gonna run into some typos, but that doesn't matter. The testimony was complete.

Maror

Autore: Lavie Tidhar

Numero di pagine: 634

A GUARDIAN AND ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022 'Spectacular... fascinating... astonishing... A literary triumph.' Jake Arnott, Guardian How do you build a nation? It takes statesmen and soldiers, farmers and factory workers, of course. But it also takes thieves, prostitutes and policemen. Nation-building demands sacrifice. And one man knows exactly where those bodies are buried: Cohen, a man who loves his country. A reasonable man for unreasonable times. A car bomb in the back streets of Tel Aviv. A diamond robbery in Haifa. Civil war in Lebanon. Rebel fighters in the Colombian jungle. A double murder in Los Angeles. How do they all connect? Only Cohen knows. Maror is the story of a war for a country's soul – a dazzling spread of narrative gunshots across four decades and three continents. It is a true story. All of these things happened. Praise for Maror: 'A bloody beast of a book.' Daily Mail 'This is crime writing in the tradition of Balzac and Dickens and a major achievement, full of sound, fury, drugs and blood... An earthquake of a book.' CrimeTime 'Some write in ink, others in song, Tidhar writes in fire... Maror is a kaleidoscopic masterpiece, immense in its sympathies,...

om love

Autore: George Minot

Numero di pagine: 368

From George Minot, author of The Blue Bowl (“Inexpressibly moving. It’s thrilling to find a writer this good.”—Amy Hempel), a new novel, moving, sensual, athletic (and aesthetic), set in the downtown New York yoga world at the turn of the millennium, a love story about a once-trendy artist who’s lost his bearings and finds his life reinvigorated by his new yoga practice—and a certain barefooted yoga teacher. To Billy, who used to show in the hot new galleries in the East Village of the ’80s and early ’90s, his downhill progression is what he calls “the vague decline.” But life feels exquisitely transformed by his new daily yoga practice (“a little hothouse sanctuary in the big city”) clearing the way; creating insight, flexibility, clarity; breathing; sweating; variations of vulnerability, arched open emotion. Billy is also enraptured by his new yoga crush. Soon he and Amanda, a yoga teacher (her “poses are pure,” “flexible and solid,” “gliding easily in her element”), are in love and are caught up in the newness and wonder of their happiness. They are inseparable—their practice is transformative; they can’t tell where one ends and the other ...

Midaq Alley

Autore: Naguib Mahfouz

Numero di pagine: 304

Widely acclaimed as Naguib Mahfouz's best novel, Midaq Alley brings to life one of the hustling, teeming back alleys of Cairo in the 1940s. From Zaita the cripple-maker to Kirsha the hedonistic cafe owner, from Abbas the barber who mistakes greed for love to Hamida who sells her soul to escape the alley, from waiters and widows to politicians, pimps, and poets, the inhabitants of Midaq Alley vividly evoke Egypt's largest city as it teeters on the brink of change. Never has Nobel Prize-winner Mahfouz's talent for rich and luxurious storytelling been more evident than here, in his portrait of one small street as a microcosm of the world on the threshold of modernity.

Genetic Makeup

Autore: Shamim Razaq

Numero di pagine: 228

The book ‘Genetic Makeup’ is made up of short stories. They are mainly about real life issues and growth. The stories cover a broad aspect of life and reflects on issues such as effects of war, mental health, healing and recovery. Childhood and dreams are very important in shaping our lives so this is very much expressed in Genetic Makeup. One story is based in Afghanistan, another in UK and Pakistan, Kashmir, India, Palestine and Nepal. The stories express how women are exposed and treated in these areas of the world and how this can effect their outlook and meaning of life. How we perceive things in the real world and how psychosis can alter our beliefs and perceptions and most importantly being positive about life is the road to recovery. The issues raised are serious and presented in narrative form staying close to reality as possible. As one character says: ‘Look,’ Deepa exposed her arms and back...’they do it when you say no. This is my story, yours has not even begun yet.’...’It’s up to you, shape into the world or die, there’s no room or time to adjust.’ However, positivism is portrayed throughout the short stories. A quote from ‘Paradise on Earth?’ ...

The Mahzur

Autore: Dr. Henana Berjes

Numero di pagine: 242

‘It isn’t enticing enough if it isn’t forbidden.’ Humanity has sworn by this dictum since eons. Aren’t we here as a testimony to the first sin ever committed by Man? How can Sin be sacred? How can anything related to life remotely be connected to sanctity and yet we swear by Sanctity as well. For years, the conflict is manifest and for years, unresolved. Somewhere between the promise of resurrection and eternal damnation, we exist as a race tugged towards both good and bad by a thin thread of belief. Satan in one minute and angel in another, we defy all logic when it comes to tasting the forbidden fruit. What is so tantalizing about it is the same thing that makes it unforgiving, its soul! And in the end it hurts, it leads to bloodshed, it kills and it destroys. It leaves us vulnerable to damage and then the perdition never ends. ‘The Mahzur,’ reminds you of a simple fact, If it is forbidden, It will Bleed.. The Al Nafud is not just another desert. It is an amalgamation of poetry and music in the right proportions but it has a heart of stone under that soft burnished gold skin. The sand dunes sing to your call as if a dozen tubas are blown in unison but it isn’t a...

Raise My Ebenezer

Autore: Richard Gerald Shrubb

Numero di pagine: 210

Mr. Rogers becomes a tainted James Bond and descends the moral allegory of Dante’s Inferno. This is a novel of personal maturation, social vigilantism, and spiritual redemption all mixed in a pot of poetic justice and viewed through the lens of traditional literary fancy. Told through the artistry of dual story lines and montage with a little bit of romance and self-help reflection on the side, Raise Mine Ebenezer is a folksy Alfred Hitchcock style thriller, not so much about who done it as it is about the anxiety of wondering what will happen next and can justice ever be served.

An epic story of a Bedouin family’s survival and legacy amid their changing world in the unforgiving Sahara Desert. Ahmed is a camel herder, as his father was before him and as his young son Abdullahi will be after him. But Ahmed’s world is threatened—by the French colonizers just beyond the horizon, the urbanization of the modern world, and a drought more deadly than any his people have known. At first, Ahmed attempts to ignore these forces by concentrating on the ancient routines of herding life. But these routines are broken when a precious camel named Zarga goes missing. Saddling his trusted Laamesh, praying at the appointed hours, and singing the songs of his fathers for strength, Ahmed sets off to recover Zarga on a perilous journey that will bring him face to face with the best and the worst of humanity and test every facet of his Bedouin desert survival skills.

Late Night Knocks

Autore: Ahmad Alam

Numero di pagine: 172

Its hard to believe its been a little over fifteen years since 9/11. My intention in writing this novel is to portray the trials and tribulations of an Arab American family in the aftermath of that fateful day. The story focuses on the plight of Amira, whose husband is wrongfully taken away by the FBI. From the confusion-laden night when Ali (her husband) is detained to the various channels that Amira is forced to explore in order to bring him home, the novel looks into the details of the journey of this determined woman. In the process, Amira is compelled to rediscover herselfin the spiritual, psychological, social, and even financial spheres. This book is dedicated to all that have tragically perished on 9/11. My heart also goes out to their families, who are not only grieving the loss of their loved ones but also had to initially witness on television the gruesome way they were murdered.

The Lost Necklace

Autore: Kuljit Mann

Numero di pagine: 164

We all want our society to be beautiful. Right thinking and a positive attitude can help. I think that some right words may come to me to address you with love and respect. Words are essential to address a friend. Traditional names will be like paper flowers. The tradition is good, but it has to be renewed in time. Are we the ones to be copied to a clipboard? Can anyone paste us anywhere? I reject any clip. You are also involved in my denial. The person is divided into thoughts. These thoughts sometimes deceive us and sometimes block our path, and we inadvertently do something detrimental. This loss is not one’s own, but for the entire society. Perhaps this is what is called experience. It is essential to realize what is happening around us. It is not enough to be busy with established tunes these days. Whether we care about society or not, this is our thinking, but the community should care about us. Growing flowers and buying flowers are two different things. It is a human tradition to love. Understand sorrows, and prepare oneself to deal with that sorrows, no matter what would be our country. My words are a gift to you. A gift is not a product but a feeling, so its value...

Join them as they navigate through the White House to Iraq and Afghanistan and blend good old-fashioned capitalism, pop music’s top acts and the President and his cabinet in a tale of success and fame, greed, infidelity, disappointment and a mysterious and delightful British Foreign Minister.

Around the Moon

Autore: Louis Mercier , Eleanor Elizabeth King , Jules Verne

Numero di pagine: 266

Having been fired out of the giant Columbiad space gun, the Baltimore Gun Club's bullet-shaped projectile, along with its three passengers, Barbicane, Nicholl and Michael Ardan, begins the five-day trip to the Moon. A few minutes into the journey, a small, bright asteroid passes within a few hundred yards of them, but does not collide with the projectile. The asteroid had been captured by the Earth's gravity and had become a second moon. The three travelers undergo a series of adventures and misadventures during the rest of the journey, including disposing of the body of a dog out a window, suffering intoxication by gases, and making calculations leading them, briefly, to believe that they are to fall back to Earth. During the latter part of the voyage, it becomes apparent that the gravitational force of their earlier encounter with the asteroid has caused the projectile to deviate from its course. The projectile enters lunar orbit, rather than landing on the Moon as originally planned. Barbicane, Ardan and Nicholl begin geographical observations with opera glasses. The projectile then dips over the northern hemisphere of the Moon, into the darkness of its shadow. It is plunged into ...

Although mainly set in the Canadian prairie, the events portrayed are really about all places, and all times.
