Did you know that Walter Reed was once a librarian at the National Library of Medicine? This book looks at the twenty-seven men and women who headed the National Library of Medicine. In its early years, the library was known as the Library of the Surgeon General s Office, and from 1836 to 1865 the Army Surgeon General acted in dual capacity as surgeon and librarian. The first person to hold this dual position (albeit informally) was Joseph Lovell, who began the library by purchasing copies of medical books for his own use. After Lovell died in 1836, his interim successor, Benjamin King, started the process of turning Lovell's collection into a formal library, which grew to become the National Library of Medicine we know today. As the decades passed, the name and functions of the Library of the Surgeon General’s Office were transformed. In 1865, the roles of surgeon general and librarian were separated when Army Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes hired John Shaw Billings to run the library. And how do books, as material arrangements of print and paper, mediate such temporal experiences? Chronometres: Devotional Literature, Duration, and Victorian Reading Culture is a study of the time-inflected reading practices of religious literature, the single largest market for print in Victorian Britain. It examines poetic cycles by John Keble, Alfred Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, and Frances Ridley Havergal; family prayer manuals, Sunday-reading books and periodicals; and devotional gift books and daily textbooks. Excavating Victorians examines nineteenth-century Britain's reaction to the revelations about time and natural history provided by the new sciences of geology and archaeology. The Victorians faced one of the greatest paradigm shifts in history: the bottom dropped out of time, and they had to reinvent their relationship to the earth and to time and history. These new sciences took the Victorians by storm, inundating them with fossils, skeletal remains, and potsherds—artifacts, or traces, that served at once as relics from the past, objects in the present, and markers of time's passage. Virginia Zimmerman explores how the Victorians utilized a nexus of literature, excavation, and reflections on time to ease anxieties about the individual's fate in the face of time's overwhelming expanse.
