Italo Calvino

Autore: Tommasina Gabriele

Numero di pagine: 175

Tommasina Gabriele's critical text addresses the paucity of intertextual studies on the erotic in Calvino's work. While Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore and Le cosmicomiche have generated some attention to the erotic, eros nonetheless remains virtually unexplored in its widest scope - despite its prevalence and centrality in the majority of Calvino's narratives, from his Racconti to I nostri antenati to his posthumous, unfinished Sotto il sole giaguaro. Perhaps for this reason such texts as Gli amori difficili and Sotto il sole giaguaro have been discussed less by critics than many of Calvino's other neorealist or postmodern fictions. Gabriele's study begins with an assessment of the critical context in which Calvino has been framed and proceeds to the analysis of several articles in which Calvino addresses the erotic in literature. Using these articles and a pivotal interview as a theoretical base, Gabriele offers an explanation for the neglect of the erotic motif as well as a theory of eros in Calvino's work. She uncovers the apparent contradiction that while Calvino repeatedly advocated - throughout his career of forty-plus years - a precise language, this call for...

Credo

Autore: Carmine Starnino

Numero di pagine: 63

What Do You Call This? My grandfather kept his in his pocket, taking it out only at dinner. I own one too. More emblem than tool really, but I love the way it answers my grip, perfectly weighted, light, the small crook of its handle hugging my pinky, the blade curved like the C of my own name, so that whatever I need to cut, I need to cut towards me, my thumb steadying the object, then a surgical half-sweep my grandfather used to shear away a bit of cheese, a chunk of bread, or to divvy up a peach, piling the pieces in his glass of red wine. And me, what do I use it for? To sharpen my pencil. Its crescent tooth bites into the wood, moving oh so quick and deep, this doohicky sickle, this whatsit scythe. Rongetta. Ron-get-ta. The elegance, verbal felicitousness, and subtle crafting that were the signature qualities of Carmine Starnino's debut, The New World, are once again on display in his second book, Credo. Whether the subject is a passport, a clothesline, an antique goblet, prayer, or archaic English words, Starnino exercises an arresting mixture of wit and wordplay that rejoices in its own resources, its own cadence and diction. Credo places Starnino in the forefront of a new...

The Mobile Spectacle

Autore: Clareece G. Godt

Numero di pagine: 167

"The Mobile Spectacle" treats Manzoni's use of variable perspective in "I Promessi Sposi," the relationship between his technique and that of other European Romantic writers and his contribution to the Italian literary language. This study shows how Manzoni consistently represents what the eye sees (landscape, cityscape) and the mind conceives (characters' plans, history) under different and often paradoxical aspects. Its thesis is that the technique of variable perspective has a cognitive function, allowing the novel to -speak- in a timeless manner of reason and folly, goodness and wickedness, human reason and divine grace."

Tacita Dean

Autore: Jean-Christophe Royoux , Tacita Dean , Marina Warner , Germaine Greer

Numero di pagine: 158

With films, drawings, photographs, audio recordings and installations, Berlin-based English artist Tacita Dean explores the ways that chance and coincidence influence daily life, constructing narratives that connect past and present, fact and fiction, private histories and larger events. Across one archipelago of works - Disappearance at Sea (1996), Disappearance at Sea II (1996) and Teignmouth Electron (1999) - Dean documents the tragic account of Donald Crowhurst and his attempts to fake a solo voyage around the globe, which culminated in his eventual loss of sanity and his death at sea. The works tell the story through various fragments and landscapes, including a magnificent sea vista from a lighthouse beacon that produce what the artist refers to as a 'missing narrative' reminiscent of an atmospheric nineteenth-century seascape painting. Art and cinema theorist Jean-Christophe Royoux uses his Survey to dissect the multiple layers of time - durational and historical - at play in Tacita Dean's work. In the Interview, writer and art historian Marina Warner talks to the artist about the remarkable origins of several of her works, highlighting their charmed relationship to chance. ...

Pietà

Autore: George Klein , Theodore Friedmann

Numero di pagine: 297

As Albert Camus's famous dictum has it, the only truly important philosophical question is suicide, or whether or not life is worth living. Now, in Pieta, his latest collection of essays, George Klein -- distinguished biologist, writer, Holocaust survivor, and humanist -- faces this question head on, in a series of meditations on subjects ranging from the misuses of science to the vital importance of art, music, and literature to surviving catastrophes like the Holocaust and AIDS. Pieta is a passionate book of scientific and personal ethics, inspired by tragic events that resonate in the consciousness of each of us. Klein examines the thoughts of a number of people both famous and obscure -- whose lives may provide some sort of answer to Camus's philosophical question. One essay, for example, deals with the tormented and unstable Atilla Jozsef, one of Hungary's greatest poets and now a national hero. Other figures from the past appear, too: fellow Holocaust survivor Rudolf Vrba, one of the first people to escape from Auschwitz; Simon Srebnik, a teenaged Pole who survived the Nazis by working on their riverboats, singing sentimental ballads for them; the geneticist Benno...

The documents concern, among other topics, the Vallombrosan Abbot Tesauro, the Sicilian Vespers' plotting, and the death by starvation of Ugolino. The book then discusses Brunetto's translations of Aristotle's Ethics and Cicero's De inventione, as texts presented to Charles of Anjou and others, as well as the influence of these texts on Dante. Appendices present the archival documents discussed in the book and list manuscripts containing Latino's writings.

Vija Celmins. Ediz. Inglese

Autore: Lane Relyea , Vija Celmins , Robert Gober , Briony Fer

Numero di pagine: 160

Vija Celmin's artworks testify to her undying fascination with the world around her, whether the commonplace objects in her studio; her childhood memories of wartorn Latvia; the natural landscapes of her adopted California; or the pebbles beneath her feet. Primarily a painter of still-life and landscape, Celmins is associated with 1960s Pop art, and often uses photographs as source material to create her signature 'impossible images', such as just-fired revolvers or exploding airplanes. Temporarily abandoning painting in the 1970s, Celmins turned her attention to drawing exquisite graphite seascapes and other vast natural landscapes.

Mazzini

Autore: Denis Mack Smith

Numero di pagine: 302

Giuseppe Mazzini was one of the outstanding figures in the political history of nineteenth-century Europe. A vigorous proponent of nationalism, pre-eminent figure in the struggle for Italian independence and unity, and fascinating personality, his ideas were influential throughout Europe. Yet successive Italian governments, fearing the consequences of his belief in democracy and revolution, deliberately obscured his achievements: there have been few modern studies of Mazzini, and no biography in English since 1902. Denis Mack Smith's major new account re-examines Mazzini's ideological impact and his place in the political and intellectual world of the mid-nineteenth century. Based on profound scholarship and immense archival research, the book vividly re-creates Mazzini's long years of poverty and exile in London, and the networks of friends, associates and enemies that brought him into contact with the greatest European figures of the age, among them Marx, Carlyle, Mill, and Bakunin. Mazzini is revealed as an acute but largely unrecognised prophet of the idea of a European community: he saw nationalism as a step towards larger and more harmonious confederations. Adept at...

Paradiso

Autore: Gillian Rose

Numero di pagine: 63

Shortly before her death Gillian Rose began work on a new book - her Paradiso - thus fulfilling her promise at the end of Love's Work to 'stay in the fray, in the revel of ideas and risk'. Confident even only a week before her death that she could complete the work, all that remains are these fragments here published for the first time. In them Rose combined the detached insight of one who is taking leave, or who has almost left, with a desire to participate in the joys of life until the last. Exceeding the injunction quoted in Love's Work to 'keep your mind in hell and despair not', Paradiso sketches a movement through the hell and despair of terminal illness to an affirmation of the joys of companionship and memory.

Berio

Autore: David Osmond-Smith

Numero di pagine: 158

Berio is one of the most widely performed and prodigiously productive of post-war composers. This book is nevertheless the first survey in any language of his work as a whole. Commentators on Berio's work have tended to concentrate on those aspects of his music that have strong extra-musical associations such as his use of words, sense of theatre, and interest in linguistics. While incorporating all of these, this account seeks to rectify the balance by focusing on the purely musical basis of Berio's work. Its chapters cover such areas as the basis of his musical language, his involvement with Darmstadt, his work with computers at IRCAM and Tempo Reale, the importance of folk music, and his theatre works. This book includes a complete list of works up to 1989, with details of his first performances and instrumentation, and a select bibliography.

Terra Lucida

Autore: Joseph Donahue

Numero di pagine: 144

Poetry. "TERRA LUCIDA, Joseph Donahue's ongoing magnum opus, is an astonishing work in which psychopompic dispatch and apocalyptic portent, by turns audacious and distraught, mix worldly exactitude with vatic unrest. Striking in its range and compression, its culling of contemporary grist and archaic light, its reportorial tone's melodic reach, it allies an unforced, unforeclosed spirituality with sifting intelligence of the severest kind. Long awaited, volume one is a beautiful, bracing, desert island book"—Nathaniel Mackey.
