Contemporary Marathi Cinema

Autore: Hrishikesh Sudhakar Ingle

Numero di pagine: 174

Post-millennial Marathi cinema is a dynamic and expanding practice that is celebrated as a “new-wave” but has not received much critical engagement. This book presents the first comprehensive inquiry of contemporary films and examines their textual, industrial, and cultural intersections to understand what constitutes the “new-ness” of Marathi cinema. Establishing the vernacular particularity of Marathi cinema, the book argues that newage films are actively engaged in a reflexive intellectual and social critique as a mark of new filmmaking in India. In the diversity of genres and topics handled by Marathi filmmakers since 2004 this study identifies four broad affective topographies for analysis – an imagery of nostalgia underpinning the narrative strategies of Marathi films, the articulation of social aspiration as a theme as well as a societal dialectic, an experiential reflexivity in the representation of Dalit and marginal narratives, and a mediatic network of border-crossings through transnational influences on films. Contemporary Marathi Cinema: Space, Marginality, and Aspiration offers a critical dialogue on broad issues of film policy, multiplex economics, genre...

An Annotated Sumerian Dictionary

Autore: Mark E. Cohen

Numero di pagine: 1580

Sumerian was the first language to be put into writing (ca. 3200–3100 BCE), and it is the language for which the cuneiform script was originally developed. Even after it was supplanted by Akkadian as the primary spoken language in ancient Mesopotamia, Sumerian continued to be used as a scholarly written language until the end of the first millennium BCE. This volume presents the first comprehensive English-language scholarly lexicon of Sumerian. This dictionary covers all the nuances of meaning for Sumerian terms found in historical inscriptions and literary, administrative, and lexical texts dating from about 2500 BCE to the first century BCE. The entries are organized by transcription and are accompanied by the transliteration and translation of passages in which the term occurs and, where relevant, a discussion of the word’s treatment in other publications. Main entries bring together all the parts of speech and compound forms for the Sumerian term and present each part of speech individually. All possible Akkadian equivalents and variant syllabic renderings are listed for lexical attestations of a word, and a meaningful sample of occurrences is given for literary and...

Autore: John R. Vile

Numero di pagine: 706

Now in its fourth edition and completely updated, this is the most comprehensive book on constitutional amendments and proposed amendments available. Although only 27 amendments have ever been added to the U.S. Constitution, the last one having been ratified in 1992, throughout American history, members of Congress have introduced more than 11,000 amendments, and countless individuals outside of Congress have advanced their own proposals to revise the Constitution—the wellspring of America's legal, political, and cultural foundations. At a time when calls for a new constitutional convention are on the rise, it is essential for students of political science and history as well as American citizens to understand proposed alternatives. This updated edition of the established standard for high school and college libraries as well as public and law libraries serves as the go-to reference for learning about existing constitutional amendments, proposed amendments, and the issues related to them. An alphabetically arranged two-volume set, it contains more than 500 entries that discuss amendments that have been proposed in Congress from 1789 to the present. It also discusses prominent...

Haditha Diary

Autore: J. D. Cowart

Numero di pagine: 450

Haditha Diary is a novel of the Iraq War set in an infamous town. Heroic, yet human, Americans fought a controversial war to uproot totalitarianism, blunt Islamofacism, and give the gift of hope. The under-recognized Christian faith of American heroes underpins the courage of fighting men in Haditha Diary. Beginning in 2002, Haditha Diary presents the story of the war through 2008. The setting is real, the story reflects actual events, and the names of heroes have been changed to protect people still fighting terrorism. Espionage, frontal assaults, and dirty-tricks culminate in a suspenseful ending when a "U.N. Mandate" floods a recently secured town with Al Queda terrorists who face off against the Marines. Treachery and patriotism abound in this thriller where battles and characters are barely fictional and always closer to the truth than the evening news. J.D. Cowart accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior in 1977. Called to serve and protect, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1991 and completed the USMC enlisted School of Infantry. After Meritorious Promotion to Corporal, he was commissioned an Officer of Marines. Cowart served as an Artillery Officer until 1999. He joined the...

The Female Voice of Myanmar

Autore: Nilanjana Sengupta

Numero di pagine: 413

The Female Voice of Myanmar seeks to offer a female perspective on the history and political evolution of Myanmar. It delves into the lives and works of four of Myanmar's remarkable women who set aside their lives to answer the call of their country: Khin Myo Chit, who spoke about latent sexual politics in pre-Independent Burma; Ludu Daw Amar, who as the editor of the leftist Ludu Daily, was deemed anti-establishment and was witness to the socialist government's abortive efforts at ethnic reconciliation; Ma Thida, whose writing bears testimony to the impact the authoritative military rule had on the individual psyche; and Aung San Suu Kyi, who has re-articulated Burmese nationalism. This book breaks new ground in exploring their writing, both published and hitherto unexamined, some in English and much in Burmese, while the intimate biographical sketches offer a glimpse into the Burmese home and the shifting feminine image.

The Oxford Handbook of Languages of the Caucasus

Autore: Maria Polinsky

Numero di pagine: 1189

The Oxford Handbook of Languages of the Caucasus is an introduction to and overview of the linguistically diverse languages of southern Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. Though the languages of the Caucasus have often been mischaracterized or exoticized, many of them have cross-linguistically rare features found in few or no other languages. This handbook presents facts and descriptions of the languages written by experts. The first half of the book is an introduction to the languages, with the linguistic profiles enriched by demographic research about their speakers. It features overviews of the main language families as well as detailed grammatical descriptions of several individual languages. The second half of the book delves more deeply into theoretical analyses of features, such as agreement, ellipsis, and discourse properties, which are found in some languages of the Caucasus. Promising areas for future research are highlighted throughout the handbook, which will be of interest to linguists of all subfields.

Theological Dicitonary of the Old Testament

Autore: G. Johannes Botterweck , Helmer Ringgren , Heinz-josef Fabry

Numero di pagine: 510

This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related...
